Electrification is part of many Sacramento remodels

Most of Sacramento is served by SMUD, the municipal electric utility, which has been promoting electrification with rebates for heat pump water heaters and heat pump HVAC. Many homeowners remodeling a kitchen also switch from a gas range to an induction cooktop or electric range. Induction is fast and responsive, and removes combustion byproducts from cooking. Before choosing, have an electrician confirm your panel and service can handle the new circuit along with any planned EV charger or heat pump, and ask whether load management could help. Confirm current SMUD rebate terms directly; programs change.

If you keep gas, a range hood vented to the outdoors is especially important to remove combustion byproducts, heat and moisture.

Heat and the kitchen

Sacramento summers bring stretches of nine or more consecutive days at 100°F or higher, according to National Weather Service records. Kitchens with west-facing windows, large ovens and poor ventilation get very hot. A properly sized hood vented outdoors, good insulation in exterior walls and the ceiling, and window treatments help. Ask whether new recessed lights will be airtight and rated for contact with insulation, so attic heat doesn't leak into the kitchen.

Winter moisture

In winter, tule fog and rain keep air cool and damp. Cooking adds moisture, and kitchens without good ventilation can grow mold around windows and behind appliances on exterior walls. A hood vented outdoors helps year-round.

Older homes

Many Sacramento homes have kitchens with original wiring, galvanized pipes and walls that hide surprises. When walls open, contractors may find outdated wiring, old plumbing, previous water damage or materials that need special handling, such as lead-based paint or asbestos in older homes. Ask the contractor to include a contingency and to explain how they'll handle discoveries.

Removing walls

Opening older, closed-off kitchens to living areas is common. Before removing a wall, a contractor should determine whether it's load-bearing and what runs inside it, and get an engineer's design for any beam if needed.

Permits

Kitchen remodels with plumbing, electrical, gas, mechanical or structural work need permits from the City of Sacramento or Sacramento County, depending on location.

Before you hire

Ask Sacramento kitchen remodelers for an itemized proposal with allowances, a schedule including cabinet and countertop lead times, how they'll handle older-home surprises, and what their workmanship warranty covers. Look up the contractor's California license with the CSLB.

Living through the remodel

Set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, a small refrigerator and a place to wash dishes. Ask for a written schedule with lead times for cabinets and countertops.

Flooring

Tile, luxury vinyl and engineered wood are common kitchen floors. Decide whether new flooring runs under the cabinets before they're installed, and make sure the subfloor is flat and solid.
