Kitchen Remodeling questions, answered
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
A cosmetic update can take a few weeks. A full remodel with new cabinets, countertops and layout changes often takes longer, depending on cabinet and countertop lead times, permits and inspections. Ask for a written schedule that includes material lead times.
What's the biggest cost in a kitchen remodel?
Cabinets are often one of the largest costs, along with labor, countertops and appliances. Layout changes that move plumbing, gas or walls add significantly. An itemized proposal shows where the money goes.
Should I reface or replace my cabinets?
Refacing makes sense if the cabinet boxes are sound and you like the layout. Replacement is better if the boxes are damaged, the layout doesn't work, or you want different sizes and storage features.
Which countertop is most durable?
Quartz and granite are both durable and popular. Quartz doesn't need sealing; granite usually does. Each material has trade-offs in heat resistance, stain resistance and maintenance. Choose based on how you cook and how much care you want to give it.
Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen?
Usually, if the work involves plumbing, electrical, gas, ventilation or structural changes. Purely cosmetic updates may not. Ask your contractor or local building department.
Can I remove the wall between my kitchen and living room?
Possibly. First determine whether it's load-bearing and what's inside it. Removing a load-bearing wall requires a properly sized beam, often an engineer's design, and a permit.
Does my range hood need to vent outside?
Venting to the outside removes heat, moisture, grease and cooking byproducts; recirculating hoods only filter grease. Outdoor venting is generally recommended, especially for gas ranges. Large hoods may need makeup air.
When should I choose appliances?
Early. Appliance sizes affect cabinet design, countertop cutouts, electrical and gas requirements and ventilation. Choose them before cabinets are ordered and countertops templated.
How do I set up a temporary kitchen during a remodel?
Set up a microwave, a small refrigerator, a coffee maker and a toaster oven in another room, with a place to wash dishes such as a laundry sink. Plan simple meals and expect some takeout.
How do I compare kitchen remodeling quotes?
Compare scope, not just price: cabinet type and construction, countertop material and fabrication, plumbing and electrical work, ventilation, permits, demolition and disposal, allowances, schedule and warranty.
