Dry air and wood
The National Weather Service describes Boise as semi-arid, and indoor air is often dry, especially in winter. Wood cabinets, butcher block and wood floors move with humidity changes, and very dry conditions can open gaps and cracks in solid wood. Choose cabinets with stable construction, let wood materials acclimate in the house before installation, and keep indoor humidity moderate.
Plumbing and cold walls
NOAA's engineering weather data for Boise records about 78 freeze-thaw cycles a year. Kitchen sinks on exterior walls are vulnerable to frozen pipes. Insulate and air seal exterior walls during the remodel, keep pipes on the warm side of the insulation, and avoid running supply lines through unheated spaces.
Ventilation
A range hood vented outdoors removes heat, moisture and grease. In winter, insulate ductwork through cold spaces and make sure the exterior damper closes tightly. Large hoods may need makeup air.
Electrical and appliances
Switching to induction or adding a second oven may need new circuits or a panel upgrade. Have an electrician review the plan early.
Basement and open-plan homes
Many Boise homes have open layouts or are being opened up. Before removing a wall, determine whether it's load-bearing and what's inside it.
Growth and newer homes
Newer Treasure Valley homes often have open kitchens with builder-grade finishes. Upgrading cabinets, countertops and lighting without moving plumbing is a common way to improve them at lower cost.
Permits
Kitchen remodels with plumbing, electrical, gas or structural work need permits from the City of Boise or Ada County.
Before you hire
Ask Boise kitchen remodelers for an itemized proposal with allowances, a schedule with lead times, how they'll keep plumbing out of cold walls, and what their workmanship warranty covers. Look up the contractor's Idaho registration with DOPL.
Water heaters, dishwashers and cold water
Incoming water is cold in a Boise winter, and dishwashers and kitchen faucets at the far end of the house from the water heater can take a long time to run hot. If you're remodeling, ask the plumber whether a recirculation system or a point-of-use water heater makes sense, and make sure the dishwasher has hot water at the connection.
Lighting for short winter days
Winter days are short, and many Treasure Valley kitchens rely on artificial light much of the year. Layered lighting, with ceiling fixtures for general light, under-cabinet task lighting on every work surface and pendants over an island, makes the kitchen safer and more pleasant. LED fixtures add little heat in summer.
Living through the remodel
Set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, a small refrigerator and a place to wash dishes. In winter, the garage may be too cold for that, so plan a space inside the house. Ask for a written schedule that shows inspections and lead times for cabinets and countertops.
Countertops and sun
If your kitchen gets strong afternoon sun, check the countertop manufacturer's guidance on sunlight exposure, since some engineered materials can discolor over time.
